Orangutans are amazing! Highly intelligent, they share 96.4% of our genes! Literally translated to "man of the forest" in Malay, these tree dwelling mammals are critically endangered. The main 2 species of orangutan are Sumatran and Bornean, although a 3rd species of Tapanuli was added in 2017.
Orangutans major threat is habitat loss from deforestation due to the palm oil and logging industries, but they are also hunted for food, retaliation for intruding on farm land, or for the pet trade where baby orangutans are taken from their mothers and sold.
