Otters are a highly important keystone species when it comes to water quality!  A healthy otter population is an indication of a healthy water shed, which is pretty impactful considering the 13 species of semi aquatic mammals can be found on 5 continents. 

North America has 2- the North American River Otter and the Sea Otter.  Otters have been poached for their fur for hundreds of years, and between that and water way pollution, by the 1970's the river otter habitat was reduced by about 75% of what it was.  But with reintroduction efforts, protections against poaching, and clean up of our waterways, these animals have made a come back!  The North American River Otter story shows us that its not too late to help endangered species!

Sea Otters are still an endangered species, and their fur, the most dense fur of all animals, has been sought after by poachers for a very long time.  The California Fur Rush of the early 1800's was devastating to the species, and it was only as recent as 2023 that a California law finally banned the manufacture and sale of new fur products in the state!
