Hippopotamus are the second largest animal on earth (the first is the elephant!) and can weigh as much as 7,000 pounds (or 3 small cars!!). Hippos spend a ton of time in the water, although they can't actually swim! They allow their bodies to sink to the bottom of the rivers and lakes they hang out in, and then jump off the bottom to propell their huge bodies back up to the surface! Hippos can have an attitude towards other animals, predators, and humans, but they are herbivores, so its all salads for these animals! There are only 2 species of hippo, the common hippo which is in vulnerable status, and the pigmy hippo which is in endangered status. Illegal hunting and habitat loss are their 2 biggest threats today.
