Sharks and rays are absolutely iconic ocean creatures and are often seen as top of the food chain. But they still face similar threats and challenges today- bycatch from commercial fishing causes irreparable harm to these animals that were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, leaving them to die from their injuries.
Whale sharks are gentle giants! These filter feeders are the biggest fish in the world yet are also endangered. Oceanic white tipped sharks are a large, warm water loving surface dweller that are in critically endangered status. Many of the manta and devil ray species are either endangered or critically endangered and are not only suffering from bycatch but also from being hunted for their gills.
Whale sharks, Oceanic white tipped sharks, and all manta and devil rays were added to the UN's Appendix 1 of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora in November of 2025. This grants these creatures the highest level of international protections possible. We are hopeful this will be a step in the right direction for these amazing animals.
