The Queen Conch is hands down the most beautiful mollusk you have ever seen, primarily found in the greater Caribbean area. Slow growing and obviously slow moving, they can live for up to 30 years! Shells can grow up to 12" in length and can weigh up to 5 lbs! The snail like creature inside that shell is commonly eaten, like much other sea food varieties, and overfishing has become a threat to this species. Queen Conch is one of the most sought-after and highly valuable seafood in the Caribbean Sea.
NOAA fisheries has listed the Queen Conch on the Endangered Species Act in 2024, working with commercial fishing operations to ensure it is not over harvested. This isn't a new thing though, this species has had protections since 1992 citing over harvesting as a potential threat to this marine gastropod.
