Axolotls (ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl) are paedomorphic salamanders native to Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City. Axolotls are most closely related to tiger salamanders, except that they maintain a permanent youth in that they never complete metamorphosis. Their adorable frills that frame their face are their gills, which most salamanders shed when they transition to land. Axolotls have lungs too, and can breathe through their skin!
Brought from Mexico to Paris in 1864, Europeans began breeding them for pets. While they can come in many colors, wild axolotls are typically brown, while the white body/pink frill axolotls are a version typically bred for pets. The wild axolotl population is in decline due to pollution and invasive species like tilapia that are eating their main food source, which is other baby salamanders! They are in Critically Endangered status, and need help to preserve these amazing creatures!
