Beluga Whales are incredibly stunning. With their white bodies and massive foreheads called "melons", you can't miss them. Often referred to as the canary of the sea, these whales make clicking, chirping, whistling, and squealing sounds to communicate with fellow belugas. Belugas primarily live in the Arctic Ocean, but will migrate into river mouths and even down stream in rivers to find fish, shrimp, crab and mollusks.
Belugas are faced with several threats today, including melting sea ice due to climate change, and boat strikes and noise interference from cargo ships. Sea ice is a hiding place for belugas, since even though they are at the top of the food chain, orcas are still a valid predator. Our ever increasing demand for overseas products and oil has resulted in more and more ships that interfere with migration patterns, and cause underwater noise that masks belugas communication with each other.
