Pandas are found in the bamboo forests of China, way up in the mountains! Pandas are technically omnivores, although bamboo plants make up the majority of their diet. They actually have special enzymes in their stomach to help them digest all that bamboo they eat, and they really need it! Pandas spend about 12 hours a day just eating!
Baby pandas are born tiny, pink, and hairless! Babies stay with their mom for the first 2 years of their life. In ancient China, Giant Pandas were considered spirits in the forest with their skull like face coloring. In today's culture, pandas are a national treasure to the Chinese, and are symbolic of peace and harmony.
Giant Pandas have been a symbol of conservation for years, and in the last decade they have improved their status from Endangered to Vulnerable according to the IUCN. But they aren't in the clear yet. Deforestation has been a huge threat to this species for a long time, and hopefully we can continue to support this iconic animal as its population slowly increases.
