Sea stars are beautiful and amazing, and yet the incredibly rapid decline of them in the coastal Pacific is bringing more attention to these fascinating creatures. With no brain, no blood, and up to a 35 year lifespan, sea stars are vital to the ocean ecosystem and even keep other species' populations in check, like sea urchins, which is a food source for the Critically Endangered Sunflower sea star.
The Sunflower sea star specifically has suffered a 95% decline in population from 2013-2018. This sea star is one of the largest of the 1,900 species of sea star, coming in around 3 feet across and sporting up to 2 dozen arms! Sea star wasting syndrome has affected this species, as well as about 20 other species along the Pacific coastline, completely disintegrating them within hours. Sunflower sea stars are now relying on humans to save their species!
